Super Mario 64 came some months before this. Now that's a sad story.

I couldn't think of anything succinct or constructive to say about this legendary piece of shit, so here’s me spitballing my stream of consciousness on Bubsy 3D:
“I take back every criticism I gave to Super Mario 64. Mario’s first 3D outing may look like a Rankin Bass production, but it looks divine compared to the Klasky Csupo fever dream here that I could have done a better job at programming.”
“I could move more fluidly than Bubsy if I was hit by a semi-truck and had a Redwood branch shoved up my ass through every subsequent physical therapy session.”
“Is Bubsy voiced by Roseanne Barr? No wonder everyone hates her.”
“Those accolades on the box are some of the most hilariously bullshit or misquoted blurbs I’ve ever seen. Did the guys who wrote those get fired and or bullied into suicide for giving this game the only praise it ever got? Edit: they are both still alive and healthy, family men, but they should still be ashamed of themselves.”
“Ooooh, I get it! It’s supposed to be the dadaist version of Super Mario 64. Very clever, guys. Nice use of irony.”
“The Charlotte Bobcats must have changed their name to make damn sure that they would never be associated with Bubsy, lest they suffer from more humiliation.”
“This game makes Custer’s Revenge tasteful by comparison. That game might have raped indigenous women, but Bubsy 3D raped every single one of our senses.”
“Sony must have bombed so hard with this game that they spent the next two console generations compensating for it by offering a myriad of solid 3D platformer franchises, the clear winner over Nintendo overall. In that case, thank you, Bubsy 3D.”
...Actually, no. Fuck you, Bubsy 3D. You make me (literally) sick.

Modern reviewers forget that this was among the very first 3D platformers, developed simultaneously with Mario 64. Neither team knew about the existence of the other until near the release. They had to invent the 3D camera, controls, and everything else from scratch.
If Nintendo hadn't happened to be working on their masterpiece on a new, far superior console — or if this had just been released a few weeks faster — Bubsy 3D would've been considered a groundbreaking game that invented a new genre.
Unfortunately for the devs, Mario 64 ended up setting the bar so high that Bubsy ended up looking terrible by comparison.

eh, if this came out first it will have still been reviewed negatively, just not as negatively. Was this ambitious for its time? Sure. Unfairly slammed? You bet! But the PlayStation would have had Jumping Flash for a year now and Tomb Raider also came out around this time. Both lacked SM64's analog controls and haven't aged the best by modern standards, but are more polished and better designed.
But I agree that this isn't even the worst 3D platformer on the PS1.
very fair point. the dev team were completely unfamiliar with the technology at the time. it was uncharted territory, so you can't be too hard on them. the people at nintendo were just on another level of talent and artistry.
I disagree. I give an A for effort to the design team's creativity, but this game is so messed up. Indiana Jones on Atari was innovative too, as it incorporated adventure game elements, but it was also bad for its time and is just as bad today.
