What are your favourite books (apart from The Devils, of course)?

Sounds like we're opposites then; I generally prefer 19th century literature. Having said that Nausea is my favourite XX century book and I really liked Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. I'm hoping that The Sound and the Fury turns up at the second hand bookshop soon.

If you like doom metal, check out bands like Evoken and Esoteric. They're both excellent.

I find that most string quartets start off messy, but that they start to make a bit more sense as you get to know them better. Schoenberg's quartets are very listenable when you get used to them and their own little world. Context is probably important too - Schoenberg's early quartets aren't too far removed from Brahms' which in turn have parallels with Beethoven. Having said all that, I much prefer Webern to Berg and S'berg, although Schoenberg has to take some of the credit as he was Webern's teacher.

Hello. I understand your point, but that's an arbitrary distortion of the scale and would no longer measure the full range of possible musical experience. You might be overlooking some of the extremely negative experiences you could potentially have with music because we all inherently avoid them. What you're talking about is an extreme form of what I call "bottom collapsing" and it's fairly common on RYM, but I prefer to use a strict, equally distributed scale. My main objection to bottom-collapsing is that different people do it in arbitrarily different ways, so it devalues the concept of rating. Of course you are free to do as you please, even if it means assigning 0.5 the meaning of "best" and 5 "worst". Well, anyway, you have really cool taste and I appreciate your thought.
