Please recommend me music! Random comment: People ruin this place :'(. I don't recommend any social relationships, anywhere. Music is timeless and placeless, at least for me. Well, I love you anyway.

Distribution of ratings & the rating system

Look at my ratings histogram and its beauty. That's what it should look like. Of course the density distribution depends on what kind of music you head to. For example if you only rate the best albums it could be exponential. Certainly that's the goal - a world that contains only good music. But that's not realistic. A flat chart would be the most serviceable option, but even though would be even, it would be polarizative, since the music here in its entirety ought to follow the Gaussian distribution / Normal Law of Errors. Also the rater should be making "mistakes" so the variance grows. And people should rate the music also diversely, besides concentrating on the music they like. The mean value should be closer to 3,5 than 4,0. The variance σ2 / Standard deviation / width of density function shouldn't be too small, but closer to the standard. Thence, usefulness of the chart grows like in the flat chart. For example, if you have only ten 4,5 to 5 star ratings in overall 1,000 ratings, it probably means that you rate so high only those albums that attract you personally, but with no actual reasons. Because after all, personal opinions are quite random. And there's really no 5-star-albums, but there must be much those that you like much, so very strong chooseyness is pointless, whereas strong sophistication isn't. Be strong and lose your opinions, opinions are always wrong; evaluate AND value everything constantly. Of course the ratings should be natural, not thought to be making the histogram better. Isn't it amazing that the bell shape builds up itself automatically, at least for sin-cere people. Sinful people will die.

Note that the average rating "should" be 2.75, not 3.0 (0.5 +1 +1.5 +2 +2.5 +3 +3.5 +4 +4.5 +5)/10 = 2.75

My Average Rating: 3.06 stars (edit: 2.97... which is reasonable because I've tried to take the best albums and now there's not so many left. edit1/2011: 2.96. edit 9/2013: 2.88 ). So it's above average, naturally. I could even say that all 3.5 star albums are masterpieces - and it's always subjective. For me, 2.5 star album can be very good, but I just don't like it SO much. Anyway, I think it's even sad to give 4.0 stars for some very nice and good album. But even if you give a bad rating, you can still love it, can't you? So here emerges the need for diverse rating system. On some other sites, there is such things, and also stylistic "ratings" for heaviness, speed etc. Even if there was a possibility to rate the music objectively and subjectively apart from each other, it wouldn't be easier. It would be more difficult. For example you could love some album but not always. Some albums you could love always, but not so much compared to previous mentioned. So we would need another system - stability, that would be attached to each rating gradient. Our subjective views are never objective for a subject either, and we can never catch the atoms that are the primary reasons, so we would need an endless amount of gradients to explain all the discontinuity.

Nowadays I listen to music more extensively, so there's much popular music and other music that I don't like so much, and the average rating has gone down. So I noticed that I had two bell curves for music on that has the average in 3.5 stars (gem prog) and one that's more like 2.25 stars (other music).

Collection/Ownership/Tags
- I own everything I have rated, so not owned is "owned".
- Used to own means that I don't even want that album, but I have listened it through.
- fmt.MP3, Owned: Digital is reserved for Finnish prog(gy) music only.
- Tag "x" means that I have it but haven't rated it yet.
- Tag "y" means I want it bad (weighted wishlist).
- Many of the tags are genres that are not primary genres in those albums, or not even that, but belong to same family in some ways. Tags are not complete, at all. I use them quite seldom.
