My musical taste will always be all about genre. If it has certain stylistic elements, I will love it. If it has certain stylistic elements I prefer music not to have, I will hate it. Simple as that. So anything that has interesting (but catchy) melodies and harmonies that go just slightly beyond the typical harmonic structures, I will love, particularly if it also has a polished production, perfect playing and beautiful vocal harmonies mixed all the way in stereo. Plus as few rough edges as possible.

On the other hand, music that is noisy, has little or no sense of melody or harmony, screaming or growling vocals or any other kind of exaggerated express of emotion (anger or depression in particular) I will probably hate. This goes for virtually all hip-hop and most of today's metal, for instance. Plus the majority of acclaimed "classical" music from around 1920 or later.

Otherwise, my lists tell more about my musical taste than the ratings do. But to make the best impression, read the year lists from the top and don't care too much about the albums near the bottom. An album that makes #92 in my year list is usually not an album that I consider to be particularly good, at least not unless it was an unusually good year for music like the first half of the 80s tended to be.

On the serious tip, producers who sample have not turned to sampling because they believe that NO SONG SHOULD EVER BE WRITTEN AGAIN EVER, they've turned either because it's a sound that they can experiment with and make fascinating music with. I mean, sampling and songwriting can co-exist, it's not impossible. <3

I don't give a damn about the ratings. My musical taste is found in my lists. And there are black acts there. Not a lot, but some. Those who make melodic music.

Also, I have given five star ratings to Stevie Wonder albums from the 70s. Isn't he black?

People who sample (that I know of) because the song in question or a sound present on it holds meaning. If you were to make a song about your childhood, why not sample one of your favorite songs from back then? Not to your childish "copy and paste" assumption. There are people who sample who just use it as a sound to loop, as well there is plenty of electronic and hip hop music that does not use sampling as well, as well as plenty of rock music (dating back to the 60s at least) that uses the technique as well.

Well, Ok, but why recycle old stuff. Why not compose new stuff instead? And, no, I am not a big fan of cover versions either. I like the idea of the singer/songwriter.

I've been perusing your lists and although you and I would probably disagree on some things (namely blues and rockabilly music), I must commend you for your outstanding tastes in new wave/synthpop/new romantic music as well as glam rock/glitter pop. Your '70s and '80s lists in particular have helped me discover both "new" albums from my favorites and even dig deeper into artists I hadn't given much consideration to previously. I'm currently listening to Construction Time Again (Your #1 choice for 1983 albums) and loving it so far! It's nice to see an RYM user whose '80s lists aren't comprised of the usual hardcore punk/noise rock (i.e., Sonic Youth) pablum that seems to be popular with the majority here. Keep up the great work!
