Bullet hell

Bullet hell games are shoot 'em ups that are characterized by an overwhelming amount of projectiles that often fill the screen. They challenge players to great extents in maneuverability, mobility and reflexes where they have to dodge the constant barrage of enemies and destroy them with overpowered weapons of their own. Batsugun is considered the first true bullet hell game, while games such as those within the Touhou Project [東方Project] helped popularise the genre outside of Japan.
