The original sprites seem ugly at first but I warmed up a lot on them very quickly. They're super expressive and I can't imagine playing it without them, so I'd recommend just playing the Windows version.
Voice acting from characters like Battler and Beatrice really elevate many scenes. I also find that the ps3 art is faithful to the intent of the original.
i'm a hardline OG sprites person for higurashi, still prefer them for umineko but i'm a bit less of a hardliner. they fit higurashi so well imo because the super caricatured style sells Big Teenage Emotions better than more professional art. i still think there's something to ryukishi's sprites in umineko but there are moments i think hit harder with the ps3 ones.
it's really a personal preference thing. regardless you can mod the steam version however you like so just play it on steam.

semantics. it's a game because it's an interactive novel utilizing a controller/keyboard+mouse. It's a video game in the same way Night Trap is a video game, it's a pretty broad definition.
i did just finish it 2 days ago so this is kind of post nut euphoria but truly and genuinely i kind of believe umineko has the same level of importance and beauty and meaning as shakespeares works or the divine comedy
