WolfTeam's Tales series introduced a new approach to JRPG combat, opting for fast-paced, active, visceral fights that helped popularize the action-rpg genre.
Tales of Phantasia broke new ground in JRPG battle systems with a 2D sideview plane that stood out from among its peers. A knack for goofier characters and humor borrowed from the likes of Lunar, albeit with more somber moments to boot. Combat is easily the highlight, even if feels a little awkwardly paced. Its few innovations - however (chaining and custom movelists) evoke the splendor of fighting games. However, issues with enemy formations and QoL issues - alongside an excruciating encounter rate, hamper much of the experience.

The GBA port of Tales of Phantasia, based on the Playstation version, is fairly shoddy and pretty much worth passing on. The degraded graphics and music/sound effects do the game a disservice, and the game also runs slowly. My copy actually died after a few years, so I couldn't even replay it on the native hardware. If you want to play the updated version of ToP that actually met US release, my advice is to download the fan translation of the PSX version. It plays quite nicely on a modded PSP, and is the definitive version of the game.

I love this game, but have had to stop playing it, because the Dhaos fight is just completely unfair.... Playing on PSX and he keeps stun-locking me.... Maybe I need to grind to level up in the castle...
