it only took a little bit of playing the original to substantially erode my childhood nostalgia for this game. what were they thinking with the dpad, physics, and gameplay loop changes. not sure who was asking to make the OG stars more annoying to get by locking them with specific characters you need to find a hat for first if you're not already them

it's a platformer remake that as a result feels much worse to actually play.

this was my introduction to mario 64. i really like the additions

better than the original tbh. wish there was an ultimate version of SM64 with all the DS additions and 2024 quality

Hot take but I honestly wish we had something between this and the N64 controls, the N64 controls are much more open ended and fluid, but it also feels a lot harder to stop him in that version compared to this. Downside is while the DS version feels easier to control, even with the dpad, it really does lack that satisfying feel

They made so many improvements over the original in this game. Replacing Shoot to the Island in the Sky was a great touch considering it was completely redundant since you already had to shoot to that island to get two other stars.
