I initially approached this like I approached Dishonored or Deus Ex HR/MD, in that I tried to explore every bit of the map, since in these games it usually lead to something interesting. Clearly, this was not the intended way to play this one, it was extremely boring and I almost uninstalled the game. However, after deciding to do a no alarms + no kills run while only doing the main+side objectives (but not collectibles, at least not until I got a skill that let me see where they are through walls, so I didn't have to explore everything), it became lots of fun. Sure, it's not the best game ever but if you want to scratch that pure stealth itch and find this on sale, I definitely recommend it, it's much better than the average rating suggests.
The average rating is unfair. This dilogy aims to be the true OG stealth-action experience of early 2000s where the first word overwheights the 2nd, - quite the contrary to how lobotomised most of the stealth is in modern gaming. And pseudo Thief proteges like Dishonored are also designed for the people who usually hate sneaking in games. The real problem lies in amateurish joker that Styx is by himself, in this game it's downright cringe. And the backtracking due to budget constraints is even more ludocrous in Shard of Darkness compared to Master Of Shadows. A shame, because the levels are alluringly vertical and open-ended semi-sandboxes - just the way i like it for this time of gameplay. And the graphical fidelity is much more vibrant these time, than just a mixture between brown and amber.
