I'm surprised this wasn't originally an arcade game given how this feels very much like one with the presentation it has, this includes the continues and the overall style of its beat em up mechanics that heavily remind me of mortal Kombat and other arcade classics.
The story is rather basic, you play as one of three cops looking to clean up the streets of an American city (insert police joke here) with the levels gradually becoming more difficult as you progress through the game. The combat is diverse as each if the officers have their own fighting style and thus, different gameplay which encourages replay value. There's an overpowered backup mechanic which essentially kills every enemy on screen that can only be used once per life and/or level that creates strategy in this game, there's also health items and weapons to further add strategy to the game as they often appear during large waves of enemies.
It's a game that can throw off newcomers (particularly some of the boss battles) however it's rewarding the further you progress through it, making you feel like you've accomplished something in the police force (insert highly offensive police joke here.)

I feel that the brilliance of Streets of Rage 2 sort of overshadows just how good this one is… In fact I think the vibe and aesthetics of the first game are still my favorite. It’s just such a cool game front to back and if there’s any fault it’s just that it’s not as good as the second one. Oh, and that fire boss made me want to rage 20 years ago and it still makes me rage today.

While undeniably a pioneer of the genre, the original Streets of Rage is kind of hard to go back to. For the most I had no real problems with the game with the combat against regular enemies being pretty fun. I found it satisfying to memorize each enemies specific quirk and utilize that to dominate the levels.
My major complaint comes from the games atrocious bosses. For certain bosses I found no clear way to continuously attack them without using the limited special moves. The strategy for some fights, especially the Mona and Lisa fight, was to die and use my special attack to wipe out the boss. This strategy failed me in the last level since your now allowed to use special attacks. As a result I wasn't even able to beat the game.
Its still worth a try if your curious and it would probably be a lot better with a buddy to play with. As it stands, this is the weakest main entry in the series which means we it only gets better from here.

I've written off old beat 'em ups after a miserable experience with Golden Axe[戦斧], but Streets of Rage surprised me. It's a lot of fun. I grew up with this game but I don't feel any nostalgia toward it. It just feels nice and there aren't many frustrating enemies. I don't feel like I'm waiting around for an enemy to get back up or getting sucker punched by cheap enemies like in similar titles. Played this on a whim and it led me to play the much improved sequels.
