This is clearly the best of the originals with how focused it is and I don’t understand why it was ever a debate. The level design iteration is perfect and this game basically has no fat. 2 is grossly overrated when people are discussing which is best
If you're into austerity then sure, but 2 added some variety which helped make it a more memorable and fulfilling experience. 3 went too far with the minigames and extra characters.
I love 2 and 3 but agreed. In 1's case, especially in comparison to the other games; less is more. The world itself has such an atmosphere to get lost in, the minigames and variety of content while enjoyable wasnt needed for what I think Spyro excels at.
the older i get, the more this becomes my favorite of the trilogy. the next 2 are brimming with characters and fleshed-out worlds but there's something about how relatively minimal this one is. it really is a set of oddly abstract environments that get more unreal the further onward you go. probably my fav use of color in any game too, whether skyboxes or terrain. and just small things like the Stone Hill barrier illusion that tricks younger players into thinking there's a vast hillscape they're being blocked off from. that's the exception - most of these worlds are suspended floating islands, probably since they didn't have the time or desire to pull off a similar illusion for each world, but it does really add to the fantastical feel of this game. the notion that some of these far-flung places you travel are really just suspended in the magical void, i love that
