if this ever gets remade i'd like to see a starfleet battles style reinterpretation of the ship combat, that would really elevate it imo

For all of this game's flaws, there's probably no other game more deserving of a sequel.

The sense of adventure is wonderful, something sadly lacking in games these days, and a game that get rids of random encounters and makes discovering wonders less tedious while keeping this game's charm would be utterly divine.

I was lucky enough to grab this for around $40 in 2019 for the Gamecube, and I am super glad I did. One of the most unique JRPGs I own, and I need to go back and actually finish it.

No point in replying to a comment from 2019, but let it be known this game was huge (within its niche) back when it came out, and was very well-received and acclaimed. Back in the early 2000s and late 90s, one of most important criticisms against Nintendo consoles post-SNES was its lack of third-party RPGs (in large part because of Square jumping ship) - which led to games such as Tales of Symphonia and this one to obtain a lot of attention and notoriety. No doubt Tales was a lot of people's first JRPG (and it sold a whole damn lot), but this was THE turn-based JRPG for the Gamecube. There were others (Baiten Kaitos, Lost Kingdoms) but those games probably received most of their attention because they were released in a system starved for the genre. Contrast with the PS2 which was an RPG machine. They were busy playing FFX and Kingdom Hearts 2 while the Nintendo crowd was stuck with Crystal Chronicles and Chain of Memories. Skies of Arcadia was a godsend for the system, but ultimately traditional turn-based RPGs were becoming more and more niche in this era. Someone pointed out this was a swansong of sorts and that is very true.

Context matters because it definitely gave this game (first on the Dreamcast before its premature death, and then on the Gamecube in its definitive version) a place in the annals of JRPG history, and unlike other more obscure titles, this one stood the test of time precisely because, well, it was a pretty fucking good game. The Gamecube version fixed the Dreamcast's horrendous encounter rate and added a lot of content that made it beyond worthwhile. I don't begin to understand the videogame re-sale market, but it doesn't surprise this and Path of Radiance have both skyrocketed in price since they're both fondly-remembered, stood the test of time, and became emblematic for their genres - all while not selling so many copies that they became ubiquitous.

absolutely adore this game, it seriously changed my life lol. I have been waiting for a sequel to this for over 20 years. I think a remaster is more likely but if either a remaster or a sequel is ever announced I will ugly cry tears of joy
