You know something went wrong with a game when SEGA develops it and doesn't even want to publish it in the US. After the series peak of Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master[ザ・スーパー忍II], it's hard to see this follow-up as anything other than a goofy disappointment. While the player move set is expanded with a block and a couple new attacks, this entry lacks the deliberate pace and tight controls that made previous entries make you feel like a badass ninja. Instead, you feel like a flailing nerd cosplaying a ninja which is further solidified by the horribly (awesome) FMV graphics that gives me new appreciation for how right Mortal Kombat got it. This is further hampered by lackluster levels, forgettable bosses and a soundtrack so bland that SEGA of Europe insisted on making its own replacement (thus making Shinobi X the superior version). With more polish, this could have been another great entry. It's not a bad game though and the hilariously campy cutscenes and levels (dinosaurs and aliens appear with no explanation) add some charm.
