When this game shines it really shines. The cut-scenes are beautiful, the sound design is fantastic, and the combat at times can be hard (although its usually pretty easy). HOWEVER the majority of this game finds the player wandering through endless cave hallways with bullshit mechanics designed to waste the players time. like the caves and train stations that you go through 3 times in a single play-through. In one of them you have to trial and error over and over where exactly to go and if you mess up you fall through the floor and have to trudge back to where you were, all while dealing with encounter rates that are sometimes so brutal you can get into 5 battles in the span of 30 steps. Most of the "difficulty" comes from moments like these instead of genuine strategy. And because of how long and brutal these sections are, it makes the artistic cut-scenes, wonderful atmosphere. and occasional hard boss fight feel rare in comparison.
if this game was severely shortened to remove the repetitive environments and dungeons designed to troll and annoy the player, it would be a masterpiece.
EDIT: I've changed my mind on this game. I do think it's genuinely great in a lot of aspects, and the dungeon design has grown on me, as I've grown to enjoy high encounter rates and somewhat-bullshit dungeon design. But I still feel like Digital devil saga did this MUCH MUCH better. The combat here has a lot of small nuances that make it inferior, it's dungeon's sometimes rely on gimmicks that aren't fun and instead just something that you have to "know" and once you know it it's a cake walk. DDS has better bosses as nocturne's are just... too easy. Not once on my replay did I feel at all challenged. The music is great, the story is good, the atmosphere, the themes, all very good. The combat was incredibly innovative, if rough around the edges and not all that fun in the latter half, and the pacing is bad. But still, a great game and worth the investment if you are a mega-ten fan.

picked this game up again after quitting about half way through back when the remaster first dropped and I'm totally hooked again. This game has a LOTTTTTTT of bullshit, and after grinding the hell out of it my patience definitely runs pretty thin, but there's so much to love about this game. The atmosphere is so dense, the music is so grabbing and the art style is probably the best out of any 2000's JRPG i've played. Hopefully I see it to the end this time, not looking forward to doing labryinth of amala again though LOL
Not nearly as difficult as it's hyped to be, but absolutely loved this. SMTV gets the slightest of edges from me from a QoL standpoint - was pretty hard going back to random encounters.
