Revolution is stirring in the Commonwealth, a totalitarian military dictatorship ruled over by Victor Sopot. You're an ex-special forces supersoldier, once a tool of the state, now fighting it for the Red Faction. You have one goal in mind - Sopot must die.
The pieces are all there. Red Faction 2 includes even more fun weapons, and the cleaner emphasis on a rote story at least keeps the presentation tight and consistent, with a few guest roles going to some pretty prestigious names. But without the understated tone of recklessness and capital destruction of the original, or even the real presence of Geo-Mod, you are left only with another FPS to throw on the pile. It's basically a Quake clone, and already aging AI does not help matters.

The original Red Faction is not a brilliant game by any means, but its at least solid. The sequel is an absolute turd however.
The destructible environments are kept to a minimum in this one, and the weapons feel really weak both in terms of sound as well as what they do on the enemy. The story is lackluster though it has some charmingly bad voice acting, and visually its okayish for the time. What bothers me though is how can they make the levels so short yet so confusing as to where to go. I had to resort to walkthroughs because the level design and objectives in the missions are really confusing. The game is pretty linear, but it demands to be played in a certain way or it simply wont let you advance. Stuff like locked doors unlocking by themselves or only be allowed to leave vehicles in very specific location. It makes playing the short campaign a bore, which is a shame because at its core the game is just mediocre. The boss fights are the worst of this, as the official walkthroughs just incentivises you to cheese them as if thats the most logical way to approach them. Im not even going to complain about the huge amount of turret driving sections, because those at least end quickly. Just a bad game from beginning to end.
