A perfectly serviceable and gorgeous platformer that feels more like a Genesis title than a SNES one. It's a bit of a shame how aimless the level design feels at times, because the movement system is a lot of fun, and I wish there were more chances to really play around with it. That said, it's great that the game encourages speedrunning; you can really blast through some of these levels when you get the routing and movement figured out. I like the exploration/collection side too, but the fact that there's zero way to tell how much of each level you've completed is a huge downside. I'd have wanted to 100% this if there was more feedback on where to track down those last couple of fairies.
Disregard that last point, my brain is smooth. There's an indicator on the minimap to show whether each level still has collectibles left. The completion tracking could still be better, but at least it exists in some form.
Oh, and stay well clear of the official English release. It completely chopped out the nonlinear level selection, the option to choose from multiple exits in some levels, all of the character dialogue before and after levels, and the multiple endings, meaning there's no longer any reason to explore or collect anything. The Japanese version is fan-translated, so the EU one is completely obsolete.
