I think the "translation" is basically a port of the original 2000 localization of EP by Atlus, not a whole new translation. Apparently there's some drama about a member of a fan translation team going behind the team's back and releasing this without any warning, but it seems to work well and saves from Innocent Sin transfer across regions.
Regardless of your opinions, the MegaTen community has repeatedly done shit like this and it looks fucking awful. This is just par for the course with this fanbase. No, this doesn't happen with other fanbases nearly as often or with the amount of toxicity it does with megaten fans.
I don't really interact with the MT community because most gaming communities in my experience are beyond toxic (FGCs and Soulsborne come to mind), but I am honestly not surprised that it's trashy and toxic.
I agree but the megaten community goes further than a lot of others with the toxicity. It's a very 4chan fanbase, contrarian, elitist, gatekeep-ish, rude and not very helpful for newcomers. There are of course some really nice people in there as well, and there's definitely a difference between someone who's a megaten fan and someone who identifies as a member of the community. But it takes patience sometimes to ignore the shitters and find the nice folks who just enjoy the series and want to help others enjoy it as well.
It's really sad indeed, thankfully I've never been one to care that much about communities. It's good for my blood pressure though, I'm going through Persona 3 right now and with the amount of sexualisation of minors in it I can just imagine how I'd feel if I had to interact with those fans.
The P2 duology, SMT 1&2 and Xenogears are really ballsy games that prove JRPGs can actually be thematically good if the developers wanted. They're not amazing games mind you, but they are ambitious in how they treat philosophy and psychology.
I'm playing through Persona 3 now and even if as a game it's overall better than all of the ones I mentioned and I enjoy it a lot, I miss the scope, characterisation and more grounded/mature atmosphere of P2. I'd take that any day over all the anime tropes I gotta get through constantly (though the evoker is cool ngl
Havent got to the 60 sp per spell section which im assuming this will have like innocent sin did but this is so much better than that mess, writing, gameplay, even the encounter rate doesnt seem as bad
