Overboard!

I'm not sure how I came across this game when I was a kid, what I do know is that every time I've tried playing it, I give up after only a few minutes due to how dull it is. The premise is simple enough, you're a bunch of pirate outlaws looking to wipe out your competition and can only do so one at a time by sinking each of their ships. The problem here is how dull and monotonous that is in game as you can spend minutes in these battles before the enemy goes down. There is a life system here, meaning the game doesn't expect you to take down your enemies all in one go, however I find myself using up all of my lives by the third stage due to there being no real strategy to take down your opponents without sustaining too much damage. This is after the fact I've thoroughly explored these empty stages which do contain powerups to replenish your health and make the fights go faster, but these powers are too few and far between to be worth the hassle.

It's a completely dull game that I'm sure was meant to be little more than a multilayer game, oh yeah there's a multilayer mode here, and it's just as dull and monotonous fighting your friends as it is fighting the Ai.

The truth is that the single player section of this game, while probably having received the most attention during development, isn't really the main draw here. It's passable at best. The main appeal for me was always the multiplayer. It's not the most sophisticated out there but there is a lot of fun to be had cracking open a bottle of rum with the lads while blowing each other out of the water. The powerups aren't particularly well balanced, some questionable design choices went into the controls, and there's really not much content - but cruising your little ship around and taking pot shots at your friends is certainly worth at least giving this a try. Nice fodder for when you need a party game that you haven't played before.
