Psygnosis started as video game developer and publisher for home computers in the mid 80s. They became one of the main publishers for the
Commodore Amiga, and enjoyed a great deal of success with the
Shadow of the Beast games and the breakthrough hit game
Lemmings in 1991.
In 1993 it was acquired by
Sony Electronic Publishing with the goal of creating original games for their soon to be released
PlayStation console platform. This lead to great success for both Sony and Psygnosis, with
WipEout and
Destruction Derby being some of their key franchises. In 2000 during some restructuring by Sony, the Psygnosis brand was killed and their main headquarters became
Studio Liverpool while other Psygnosis studios were either shutdown or rebranded under different names.
