MediEvil

Well considering this is a remake of 22 year old game, we can rate it from two perspectives:

As a nostalgia trip it works mostly because it contains the original emulated version of the game. The remake gameplay is mostly untouched but the grim gothic style of the original was changed to something more cartoonish and cheerful, a similar change to what happened in Diablo III in comparison to previous games. I personally think lot of the charm of the original game was lost here and that charm and art style was the best thing about the game.

As a modern action-platformer this game did not age well in my opinion. It has very unprecise controls and the camera is annoying as hell at times. For most of the game it is not a big deal as most of it is pretty easy and one can see that the controls and animations in some way were designed to make the main character look funny and unprofessional. But I started to lose my temper on some later levels and made a rage quit at ghost ship, as some of the platforming parts were infuriating. The game is fun when it flows easily, but gets frustrating the moment it demands from player precision and good timing.

Technically the game is disappointing. We have two modes - 30 fps which is laggy and does not feel smooth and responsive, and uncapped which is better to play but has unstable framerate. Well for a game which has visuals of a indie game and has very small levels this is not impressing. There are no excuses for this not to run steady 60 fps when you compare it to other remakes and remasters like Shadow of the Collosus or The Last of Us, which are levels above it in terms of visuals and run flawlessly.

So for fans of the original the game is worth a buck for the original version alone, newcomers can give it a try when on sale. The game is very short and has issues, but still its a unique title in terms of art style even after 20 years so it always is something worth of checking out, even if gameplay does not hold up very well after all these years.
