Marvel's Spider-Man

Basically the Arkham games for the unparticular type of individual with a propensity for the conventional ways of thinking, but also you get to swing around New York on webs. Where Arkham comes in as dark, gothic, more sinister and dramatic, this game comes in as more of a cookie cutter, sunshine and metro-cityscape art style. The combat and gadgets function very similarly to the Arkham games as well. Not a huge fan of the militarized cityscape theme that takes place, and the writing does a poor job of conveying real seriousness. The mission variety makes the story compelling and easy to follow. Other than that, the bosses, combat, visual design, everything, is amazing. It's a spiderman game, come on.

The comparison of Marvel's Spider-Man with MCU blockbusters can be a bit overused, but it's hard to describe it more accurate. It looks great, plays great and every aspect of the game shines with quality. It has epic, drama, humor - in short everything, what people love about such entertainment.

The flip side of all this - like most blockbusters, the game lacks novelty and creativity. Essentially, it's a combination of modern open world trends, filled with fairly dull (and mostly bad written) side quests to expand the playtime. It has no signs of experiments or originality.

And yet, all main components work out very well, and the overall level of execution allows to recommend the game to anyone, who isn't allergic to commercial blockbusters, superheroes or modern open world games.

I liked:
- Atmosphere, production and quality of true Marvel blockbuster
- Solid gameplay with fun rhytmic combat system
- Stunning technical execution

I didn't like:
- Empty ubisoft-style open world with mostly average side quests
- The city looks rather grey and pale, which slightly spoils the impression of overall cool visuals
- Boring filler missions featuring other characters

This is the peak of Spider-Man in gaming. The combat feels great, the story is fairly engaging, the visuals are stellar, and of course the web-slinging is absolutely amazing to play with.

Great game, but... I don't know, sometimes. The Last of Us is one of my favorite games, but that doesn't mean I want literally every first-party Western Sony title to be a copy of it. "Cinematic" third-person games with some forced stealth sequences, an interest in open-world push, and an overall focus on narrative, character, and performance. The thing is, like a lot of these games, Marvel's Spider-Man does indeed have a mostly good story, but it's not without hiccups. About two-thirds of the story focuses mostly just on Mister Negative and the Demons, but then the plot gets a little hijacked by the assembly of the Sinister Six. This is strongly foreshadowed by Peter's apprenticeship with Dr. Octavius, which is a big plot running through the game as well, following "Peter Parker's story" rather than "Spider-Man's story." It makes sense that the two converge eventually, but the way it's executed made me feel like we needed a couple more hours of content or something; for the purpose of the game itself, Electro, Vulture, Scorpion, and Rhino come out of nowhere. Like, "sorry we made you deal with this Literally Who for so long - here's some Spidey fanservice now." Oh, and I also don't like how sometimes the game stops after a big mission and makes you just dick around for a little before you get a phone call to prompt the next main mission. I'd rather the process be streamlined.

The combat is pretty damn satisfying, as is the web-slinging, so I'm definitely quite hyped for my PS5 bundle to arrive with Marvel's Spider-Man 2. I just wish Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales would actually go on a real sale (the lowest I've seen it is $20, which is the price I sent for the GOTY version of this game, with all the DLC, totalling way more content than what I've heard of Miles's expansion. I think it's on PS+ right now, actually. But do I want to jump immediately into another game and a half of the same shit?

I’m a fan of Spider-Man games but even I can admit that they’ve lost their allure over time with me due to the over saturation of them. I applaud developers for at least trying to add more depth to the game with the side missions and it’s a great game if you’re a fan of the superhero
