I generally dislike horror games, but the It Steals's concept piqued my curiosity. After playing for about 10-20 minutes, I was reminded as to why I don't like horror games: I'm a big pussy. Regardless, there was something that made me go "holy shit that was a rush" in a good way. It's very basic in terms of gameplay and mechanics, but I think that any person that enjoys getting the pants spooked off of them would appreciate it.
It Steals features 5 survival horror game modes. All 5 of the game modes have you searching around a black-and-white, dimly-lit checkerboarded maze for a number of blue orbs. Inside the maze, is a monster (or several, for one specific game mode) that will kill you if it catches you. What differentiates this game from some other horror games is how each monster hunts you in the 5 game modes. The game likes to screw with the player's interface and expectations as you progress through each mode, with terrifying effect.
The starting game mode pits you against a 2-meter-tall monster that peers at you with its large, unsettling red eyes. Even just checking corners and seeing its gaze set me off in a panic. This game's sound design is also done well; hearing this monster hastily-rushing behind you, illuminating your path with its blood-red vision, is an adrenaline rush. In contrast, another game mode features a sadistic version of "hide-and-and-seek." This mode's monster hides itself on the maze's checkerboard ground, as a pixelated coiled mass. If you get too close to it, it springs up like trap and declares itself "I'M IT." You are given a few seconds to run into cover and hide, before it goes into a manic search throughout the maze.
