Stealth horror
Genre
Stealth horror games focus on exploration and incorporate stealth mechanics to hide and sneak around enemies to avoid combat encounters. They may include combat mechanics but they tend to be more limited than in survival horror games and the confrontations are often much more lethal, increasing the player's sense of vulnerability. Frictional Games's Amnesia: The Dark Descent is often credited with popularizing the genre, though the studio's earlier Penumbra games share many of its gameplay concepts. Outlast is also considered a representative of the genre, where the player lacks the ability to attack enemies and is instead forced to rely on stealth options, such as sneaking, staying in the shadows, or hiding in lockers. Alien: Isolation is another example, with the player facing the danger of The Alien, similarly requiring using stealth tactics in order to survive.
