It's a technically astonishing and complex game for the Atari 2600. Incredibly fun, though this is in essence more of a logical pattern game than a platformer/action game, but it's still tense, especially in the latter levels where it's easy to get tricked and lose the very scarce dynamites. It can be frustrating, but its addictiveness makes it valid. Who would've thought Atari 2600 could still have games in 1984, but with such radical variety and melodic gameplay?
The Atari 5200 and SG-1000 port have a couple of control quirks. Now planting dynamite is delegated to a separate button instead of the terribly unintuitive "down" direction, but in other respects, it seems to me that flying maneouvers are now too sensitive and you have to be careful with them. At a base level, I would consider the ports' controls slightly superior, but any console release is a good way play H.E.R.O. I'll give a slight edge to the SG-1000 as the best port.
