This game is odd because it was released 2 years into the cycle of the SNES, which was a much more advanced console than the NES, yet Capcom in a bizarre decision decided to develop this for NES. As a result, it doesn't look as nice as games like Super Mario World or Link to the Past. But it still does have a nice graphic boost from the prequel, which was mostly limited due to being on Gameboy.
Gargoyle's Quest II improves a bit from the first. Now there are no more random encounters in the Overworld, and the Overworld is a bit more streamlined and easier to navigate. You no can just talk to NPCs and pick up items with just a single button press, and the levels are a bit more fleshed out and longer.
However, I also feel like it doesn't improve enough. The gliding in this game felt a bit more restricted and I hate the jump in this game, it feels a lot shorter. The other thing is this game is a bit more difficult and throws more tough platforming and cheap enemies than the original game. There is one part where you have to time your glide over a firepit and if you do not time it frame perfect you won't make the glide and die. Its just a bit too unforgiving at times. Aside from those issues, it is mostly identical to the original game, it has similar design, similar style bosses, and I found the bosses in this to be about of the same quality as the first game. And length wise its about the same length and can also be beaten in around 2 hours. Its a decent NES game, but definitely a tiny step down from the original Gargoyle's Quest for me, and would be expanded greatly upon in the SNES sequel.
