Though ostensibly a game about piloting and maintaining a massive, whale-shaped land crawler, FAR: Lone Sails in actuality has more in common with atmospheric platformers like Limbo. The scenery is majestic, the controls are simple, and the puzzle mechanics are straightforward. Most puzzle solutions became immediately apparent as soon as I uncovered all the pieces.
But this isn’t a game you play for the puzzles. It’s more about the vibes. You spend most of the game scurrying about your vehicle, hitting buttons to gather fuel, feed the engine, and hoist the sails. You cruise through monochrome wastelands, the bluish light emitted by your engine providing the only respite from the grey, and bulldoze through abandoned factories, wondering but never knowing what the dilapidated machinery once manufactured. What happened to this world? Why are you traveling through it alone? These questions are never explicitly answered. Perhaps it’s better that way.
My biggest complaints are that the camera is a bit fiddly – I always felt like I was either too far or too close to the action. Also, managing the vehicle is perhaps a bit too simple. In a game this short, however, these grievances are easy to forgive. My three hours spent immersed in the world of FAR were three hours well spent.

FAR: Lone Sails will take you on an adventure through a post-apocalyptic world, which I understand has become so due to global climate change. You overcome your path on a special machine, which is something between a ship and a train. The gameplay consists of constantly managing this machine (handling the sail, filling up fuel, blowing steam out of the engine, fixing broken equipment) in order to simply drive forward accordingly. In my opinion, this part is done quite solid and exciting, although the first time FAR: Lone Sails annoyed me, because you have to constantly do this very micromanagement and you don’t even have an extra minute to relax and enjoy the audiovisual experience that happens in the background. But if we consider the game from a philosophical point of view, everything immediately falls into place. So you leave your home and start a journey to nowhere. Due to the constant routine and domestic work, you do not have time to simply pay attention to the beauty of the world in which you are (even if the whole world has turned into a kind of drained seabed). Sometimes you encounter insurmountable obstacles on your way, for the solution of which you need to get out of your cozy and understandable comfort zone (machine) in order to deal with these problems and go (drive) further. And sometimes your path will be burdened with additional difficulties (bad weather or uneven terrain). FAR: Lone Sails is quite short and takes about 3 hours to complete. Of course, I would like the game to last a little longer, but in the game there is nothing superfluous, as in terms of mechanics, and repetitive, as in terms of game situations. Of the obvious pluses, I can note the art direction and musical accompaniment, and of the obvious minuses, a weak narrative and an indistinct ending.

Much like limbo or inside, this is a single screen game, that you fully transverse from left to right throughout its 3 hour lenght. The main locomotion is through its whale sized vehicle, but there are also some platforming and simple puzzles to unlock barriers. Its a very relaxing and enjoyable experience despite the unsatisfying conclusion.
