Family Guy: Video Game!

While I maintain that the first few seasons of family guy remain classics to this day, this tie in game is a sad omen of what the franchise will become given how uninspired it is compared to its source material.

While the concept of the game isn't bad, its execution is as it's a hybrid of a stealth game, a third person shooter and a beat em up as you have Brian stewie and Peter play through these stages respectively while receiving powerups based on how well you do in minigames that serve as the cutaway gags the show is known for. While the game takes the jokes from these scenes verbatim, that's about the only thing it does right as the gameplay is atrocious regardless of who you're controlling. Brian's stages have him sneaking around areas without getting detected which seems simple enough but is hampered by an irritating mechanic where he exposes himself should he give into his canine instinct, which is something that can happen all too easily in his stages. Stewie is the most playable out of the three as his gameplay is very simple and thus, doesn't have any drawbacks to it. The only irritating thing about his stages is whenever he has to swim as for some reason, he continuously moves forward in the water which makes navigation a pain during these stages. Other than that, there's little to say as vaporising enemies and mind controlling the citizens if quahog gets old surprisingly fast despite these mechanics working fine in the game. Peters’ gameplay is the most broken of the three as the collision detection is very wonky, too often he'll clip through enemies and environments which makes pulling off combos a huge pain especially with the stronger enemies. His campaign is also the worst when it comes to the story, Brian has to hide from the law due to Lois’s father framing him for impregnating his dog (like in the show) whilst Stevie has to stop his brother from conquering the world (also from the show.) Peter on the other hand randomly beats the shit out of everyone in quahog for seemingly no reason which I assure you isn't a plot point in the show (at least from when this game came out.)

It's a very awkward game from a critically divided franchise, sure the humour mostly works, and it doesn't look too bad with its presentation, however the gameplay is dull regardless of who you’re playing which makes this a game worth skipping even if you like the show.

Most of us only really even know about this because of that one OneyPlays video. If not for that, it would've just fallen into obscurity, never to be seen or heard of again.

None of the jokes really tend to land. The gameplay mechanics feel like the kind where you have to force yourself not to put the controller down, like gritting your teeth and putting on a fake smile. The only merit this game has is if you're taking the piss out of it.

If you need to recommend someone a comically bad game, this is a pretty good choice.
