The first game in the Dynasty Warriors franchise is an anomaly. Instead of the crowd combat hack-and-slash gameplay of every later entry, this first title is a one-on-one fighting game that borrows heavily from the likes of Tekken and Virtua Fighter. It's no wonder that the Japanese chronology does not consider this game to be in the same series as the rest of the "musou" entries, and instead starts numbering with what is known in the West as "Dynasty Warriors 2," thus creating the odd scenario of each Western release being one number higher than the corresponding Japanese release.
I don't play many fighting games, but I enjoyed my time with this one, especially learning to cheese the CPU of the more difficult combatants. The music is very memorable and exciting, and the CGI ending cutscenes are unbelievably glorious and cheesy. I could actually see myself coming back to play this game later on, even just for the music and aesthetic.
