I was so into
Dragon Ball Z as a kid that my father still knows the names "Goku," "Gohan," "Vegeta," and "Piccolo" (though I don't know if he could match names to faces), just as my parents both know "Pikachu," "Charmander," "Squirtle," "Meowth," and I think "Bulbasaur," and they know "Tommy," "Jason," and "Kimberly" as
Power Ranger names. My point here is that when I was so excited to finally own this game, which I got on my ninth birthday, less than a month before its superior sequel came out, which I didn't know would exist, and which I may have rather received, my father said something like "Oh, so it's about Goku's son?," which confused me a bit, mainly because I didn't know what "legacy" actually meant at that age, but which stands strong in my mind as a
pretty big reason why this game sucks: the entire game focuses on Son Goku's training during the Saiyan and Namek arcs of the
Dragon Ball story, during which times he's
mostly off-screen, either
dead or near-death and recuperating on a space-ship.... I would not have been able to make the comparison in 2003 (when I first played the game), but in later years I would get around to
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap and
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Four Swords, and see that
The Legacy of Goku is not unlike that series's brand of top-down action-adventure... and that the developers probably
wanted to call it "The Legend of Goku," but felt they may be infringing a copyright, and so chose a similar-looking "L" word. I was thinking earlier today that I kind of want to learn how to use RPG Maker to create a "remake" of this game, expanding the playable roster to give time to Gohan and Krillin, especially as one could easily fluff up the playtime by throwing content during Gohan's time training in the mountains as Earth awaits the arrival of Nappa and Vegeta, similar to how this game's sequels use the search for Dragon Balls to occupy you with less-than-canon events between major boss battles. (I would say, start the game with Goku, have him die against Raditz, then shift to Gohan training with Piccolo, while maybe having Krillin train with Yamcha and Tenshinhan, then have Krillin fight against the Saiyans before Goku's return, then swap between Goku, Gohan, and Krillin against Vegeta, and have Gohan and Krillin on Namek for a good while, before starting Vegeta's redemption by making him playable, and Piccolo as well, before Goku's return. Maybe have Piccolo playable during Gohan's training and against Nappa. Maybe start the game at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai with Goku versus Piccolo, so you can play as Piccolo versus Raditz before the Saiyan meets his brother and nephew, and try to wedge Garlic, Wheelo, Tulece, and Lord Slug where they don't belong.... Fuck, I love
Dragon Ball so much, it gets me rambling...!)
Anyway, I always liked how there was a (low-quality) soundbite of Goku shouting "Kamehameha," but I always disliked how the technique was the wrong color.
