The gripping expansion pack for DOOM 3 takes your even further into the the DOOM universe. Two years following the unexplained disaster on Mars, the UAC returns to the abandoned facility to investigate a mysterious beacon buried deep in the ruins of the ancient civilization.
This is an expansion pack that justifies it not being part of the main game, that is it tells a story that couldn't fit in the main campaign even if it feels more at home in a half-life game than in the doom franchise.
Let's just rip the band aid off, the game all but steals the gravity gun from half-life as it's the first new asset the game introduces, and it works exactly the same here as it does in that game. The worst part is that I've completed this game often forgetting I even have it as outside of the opening stage where you find it, the game doesn't have any puzzles where it's required as the main gimmick it offers is the hell time our new marine acquires in the opening cutscene. It's all but useless until you defeat the first boss, where you're granted the ability to slow time down. This is where most of the game’s mechanics revolve around as it introduces several new enemies that are way faster than our hero and can only be defeated consistently with thus new mechanic. The expansion unfortunately keeps the main issue with the main game by having the flashlight be treated as a weapon rather than a peripheral, this is thankfully changed in the remake where it can be used at any time in combat. A downside to the remake is that it removes the breathing mechanic from the toxic maze, this is unusual as this section did an amazing job in the original release in adding tension to the player as they fight an onslaught of tough enemies whole making sure they don't due from the toxic fumes. Aside from these changes, both versions are identical to each other.
It's a good dlc worthy of your time, just perhaps a bit too obvious with copying what worked wonders about dooms main competitor without realising why that mechanic works so well.

To be fair, this isn't a bad DLC, it actually is in the same spirit as Doom 3 and plays similar to that game, and has similar looking locations. I do feel there is more of an emphasis on combat than the core game though and they do throw bigger enemies around more common. Not much to say it does an alright job but isn't great. The story is pretty forgettable and doesn't really add much. If you like Doom 3 you'll like this, if you just thought Doom 3 was okay you'll think this is just okay. For me that's about how I rank the DLC.

I've seen people mention this as being more fast-paced and action-orientated but I really don't understand that viewpoint. I guess the eventual speed boost with devil time, and the general less focus on horror, but it just felt like Doom 3 with annoying gimmicks and more annoying enemies.
