Having recently dusted off the good ol' PS2 and the collection, I decided to try out some of the old games I never got around to playing back in the day. I pulled out Clock Tower 3, a survival horror game published by Capcom back in 2003, and found myself pleasantly surprised by it!
Clock Tower 3 is a short, sweet, and simple horror game. You play as a teenage girl named Alyssa who comes home from school one day to find her mother missing and only a strange man in her place. The game kicks off shortly after when Alyssa finds herself transported to a strange, dream-like world.
Clock Tower 3 features all the standard survival horror fare - inspecting the world around, collecting items, looking for keys to progress, ect., but the real interesting part of the game is when you run into each of the stage's unique enemies. Now, while the game's enemies may be a lot more goofy than scary, they still keep things interesting by chasing and attacking you throughout the game. You spend a good amount of the game running and hiding from enemies as you are pretty much defenseless most of the time. Each stage in the game ends with a boss fight against that stage's respective enemy.
The overall atmosphere of the game is pretty good. Graphics and visuals are decent for their age and the game is easy to pick up and play. The story is pretty silly, especially as the game goes on, but that's part of the fun! It's a simple game to play as progressing through the game is fairly quick and easy - which is good for me since I'm not as good at games as I used to be. The boss battles can get a bit annoying, however. I finished the game in about eight hours according to my save file and while it definitely isn't as great or polished as some of the other classic horror games of the era like Silent Hill or Fatal Frame, I enjoyed my time with it. It's a decent game for what it is.
Clock Tower 3 is not a masterpiece by any means, but I can recommend it to fans of 2000s horror games. Get it if you can find a copy for cheap, or y'know, just emulate it.

Not entirely without merit, but is just so ho-hum an entry that wastes all of its potential. The concept of jumping through time, relieving ghosts of their personal pains while outrunning the serial murderers of their era is legitimately enthralling on paper, but the delivery is ham-fisted for the first half, and by chapter three, has basically given up. At that point, you are left with a mediocre survival horror with tedious puzzles and hazards that become more annoying than anything else, and a recurring boss battle system that lacks the control needed to be fair.
Still, the elements of Clock Tower 3 that kind of work would blossom into the building blocks of the almost brilliant Haunting Ground, so its existence is justified and in some circles is still worth playing.

One of the most absurd horror (?) games i've played in a while. I ~kinda~ loved it, but it's also very annoying to play at times due to how often the pursuers show up, kinda ruins a lot of the great atmosphere this game has.
Fuck that final boss fight as well, it's such a slog D:
