A Metroidvania Without A Minimap, What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
A somewhat intriguing spin on the Metroidvania genre, CARRION is a game that I almost forgot existed after I failed to try it out within my time on the Xbox Gamepass.
Starting with the good, CARRION's artstyle and atmosphere are great. From the design of the playable creature, to the NPCs, and to the graphics, all of it is just a treat to look at. It reminds me a lot of Broforce in the graphics department.
Most of the gameplay I would count as okay. The puzzles are decent and the combat (while a little wonky) has some degree of freedom to it. Throwing objects at enemies doesn't seem entirely immersive, and somewhat more like I'm cheesing the game, but it is expressive and free in that regard. As for the puzzles, the main issue I had with them was the repetition of the "deposit" mechanic. Commonly, I would misclick and deposit more than was necessary and be stuck in a long, repetitive animation for some seconds.
My main problem lies within 2 things, the lack of a minimap (which everyone seems to complain about), and the shocking lack of horror. Starting with the lack of a minimap... really? This seems like something that would be in the Game Design 101 class for Metroidvanias, and yet they completely forgot its inclusion. Secondly, I get that this is a "reverse horror" game, but after the first couple of kills the lack of psychological thrill really makes me feel like I'm missing something. The characters do not do more than scream incessantly, you can only rip them in half, and the gibs/blood are barely even noticeable. I was expecting to feel more like a villain while playing this game. Where is the horror?
The music was just okay, nothing spectacular and it didn't add enough to the game in my opinion.
The ending was incredibly bland and left lots to be desired.

Doesn't feel like almost any other game I've played. Great execution of a great concept, easy recommend if you want to play as a gore-monster tossing guys around. Yanking doors off their hinges and tossing them behind you is as satisfying as biting into a crisp apple.

A neat idea for a metroidvania, but really disappointing execution along with bizarre design choices like not having an in-game map. If the idea interests you I'd call this a maybe play if you can ever pick it up on sale, but otherwise feel safe to pass on it.

Al principio se me hizo muy divertido, la sensación de ser ese monstruo carnoso y sangriento despedazando humanos, ¡muy retorcido y genial! Pero ya después de un rato se me hizo muy tedioso, repetitivo, aburrido. Me perdía a ratos, pero dando vueltas daba a donde tenía que llegar. Hace falta un mapa.
Pretty low level of fun for most of the run time,, like the level at which optimal play is found while socializing in a Discord call.. Once you finish bunker the lack of a map suddenly becomes painful,, though once you manage to bumble your way into the ending it manages to be the single best moment in the game.. Very mixed feelings on this one
Holy fuck this game does not respect your time at all. It just expects you to know how to do things and know where you are going. Really boring experience to try to complete.
ended up quitting a third of the way through. before then I actually just tried to avoid killing people as much as possible, like "dont worry about me just passing through, trying to figure out where the fuck I'm supposed to go"
