Criterion Games tried out a first-person shooter in 2006 with Black, and it panned out fairly decently. While I found that a lot of its ideas were explored in more sophisticated and enjoyable ways in franchises such as Halo, this was a solid effort that can provide a solid handful of hours of fun if you're looking for it.

This one has been described as gun porn, and it really is that.
Black is fps exclusive for hte ps2, and you get surprised to how good it looks. It certainly looks closer to early ps3 than ps2, and nowhere is this more suprising than the work placed on the guns. They look amazing, and the reload and firing animations are mesmerizing. There are also some really great work done on explosions and environmental destruction. Enemies react well to your shoots, but unfortunatly there is no blood or gore system in this game, which is a huge let down.
Thankfully the gunplay is great, because thats pretty much everything you will be doing in this game. The story is some undercover story whic is bland from beginning to end, and unfortunatly the game has unskippable cutscenes. The games are very linear, and there is really no sort of puzzles to do to progress forward. There are lot of collectibles to find, and this can be a nice distration to get more time out of the game. Its a short title though, and not a lot of replayability except beating it on harder difficulties.
It has some issues in terms of difficulty and level design in a couple of missions, as in they throw way too many enemies at you. RPG wielding enemies are especially deadly in this game, but fortunatly you can explode their rockets on their face. It really forces you to keep you moving because of flanking enemies and destructible cover, but at the same time everything is hitscan. Many enemies are also complete bulletsponges, which is annoying.
Feels like a tech demo more than anything else, and despite how amazing the gunplay and explosions are, its really flaws in the gameplay department that prevent it from being one of the best of all time.

I remember playing this at some local Playstation parlour, used to be a thing in my country during the PS2/PS3 days. I remember finding it quite average. The only reason I went to that place anyway was to play fighting games that most devs wouldn't ever care to make for PC.
runner up to that would be Haze
