Portal

Franchise
Portal is a series of first-person puzzle-platform video games developed by Valve Corporation, embedded in the Half-Life universe. The principal installments, Portal and Portal 2, revolve around Chell, a protagonist compelled to navigate a sequence of trials within the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Here, a malevolent artificial intelligence, GLaDOS, presides over the facility. Central to the gameplay is the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device or portal gun, enabling the creation of wormhole-like connections between flat surfaces. Chell and objects within the game can traverse these portals, conserving momentum and facilitating intricate maneuvers such as "flinging" to overcome obstacles in test chambers.

Various mechanics, including lasers, light bridges, high energy pellets, buttons, cubes, tractor funnels, and turrets, contribute to the complexity of the challenges within the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, either aiding or obstructing the player's progress towards the exit.

Portal's development involved collaboration with students and projects from the DigiPen Institute of Technology, incorporating their ideas into the final games. The concept of portals originated from the game Narbacular Drop, while the surface-altering "gels" in Portal 2 drew inspiration from the game Tag: The Power of Paint.

Both Portal games have garnered widespread acclaim and achieved substantial sales figures. Initially part of The Orange Box compilation, Portal surpassed its intended status as a bonus feature and emerged as the standout component. The success of the first game paved the way for the creation of Portal 2, a more extensive and elaborate sequel featuring both single-player and cooperative modes. Portal 2 continued the series' tradition of critical acclaim, celebrating challenging puzzles, along with its dark humor crafted by writers Erik Wolpaw, Chet Faliszek, and Jay Pinkerton, and exceptional voice work by Ellen McLain, Stephen Merchant, and J.K. Simmons.

Beyond the gaming realm, the Portal series has inspired various spin-off media and become a source for internet memes, solidifying its enduring impact on popular culture.
