Solid 5. I mean its an incremental game. It just exists. It has some style and humor to it, so its not totally worthless.

Solid 5. Great music, atmosphere, worldbuilding, and visual style. The exploration is neat and flying around the world as a bird is also really cool. Unfortunately, there isnt much in terms of gameplay. Most of it is just very simple puzzles, which is fine but there are also a few overworld navigation hints that can easily be misinterpreted. It doesnt help that the map isnt labeled and has no way to place markers, so you just have to guess where the location you want to go is. Plus, jumping feels extremely floaty and since its one of the only actions you can do, it gets annoying. Would have been a Solid 6, but if you exit the game or leave a temple at any point before its finished, you lose all of your progress even if you saved, which is a horrible design decision.

Solid 4. This game is very rough with extremely difficult combat, a tedious amount of walking, Text-to-speech voice acting, and bad encounter design but I appreciate the ambition.

This is at like an 8.99. What a fucking game. With a phenomenal story, excellent presentation, rock solid gameplay, and that classic Remedy personality, the team has truly created something special. I want to give this an even higher rating but the games awkward flashlight boost usage, somewhat clunky camera, randomly generated loot, weird inventory management controls, and excessive use of unnecessary jumpscares (FUCK Cynthia) hold it back from perfection. These issues do not stop it from being an absolutely brilliant game.

Solid 3. Its basically a shameless Hitman clone except the missions are nowhere as well designed and the controls are somehow even worse. In addition to looking and playing like it came out in 2006 instead of 2016, the game has bugs everywhere with objects moving by themselves due to the screwy physics, characters clipping into the environment and each other, AI behaving erratically, and constant crashing. If it controlled well and was stable, it could be so bad its good due to the physics and bugs, but it just ends up being awful. Premise of playing as a Cold War spy is pretty cool and the style of the cutscenes (even if they are just stills) is okay.

Strong 3. More like Aliens: Spunkgargleweewee. Not the worst game ever but pretty fucking bad, especially if you know Aliens. The gunplay is sloppy and has no sense of impact, the AI either charges you or stands perfectly still, the dialogue is horrendous, and the story is a mess complete with one of the most insane and baffling retcons Ive seen in a franchise. Even the few good ideas the game has are wasted. The one stealth section was a great idea but resulting in you just playing red light green light with blind xenomorphs and the queen boss at the end is laughably bad. There is also the loader and big xeno fight that should have been awesome but was shockingly terrible. The game also somehow managed to fuck up iron sights aiming, as shots land a bit under the reticle on some sights and weapon sway will move the targeting redicule and your weapon but your bullets will still hit as if the gun was perfectly still. The overly macho attitude and reactions of the marines also show that the writers completely missed the point of Aliens. If that wasnt enough, the game is still pretty buggy and constantly triggers dialogue lines before others are done and cuts them off.

Strong 3. The gameplay is marginally better than the base game (still has just about all the same problems though) but the story is worse so it gets the same score. The whole reason this DLC exists is to explain the insane Aliens retcon the base campaign pulls out of its ass. The thing is, the expansion goes on to make MORE ridiculous and contrived changes surrounding the events of Alien 3, at one point even blatantly retconning the opening scene. Even aside from that, the narrative has the same sloppy storytelling from the base game, barely explaining what the hell is going on, and has a ton of stupid moments while characters act inconsistently. Unbelievably, despite this expansion revolving around Corporal Hicks, YOU NEVER GET TO PLAY AS HIM! Instead you play as a young woman waking up from cryo, a Colonial Marines vet who kind of comes out of nowhere, and a doctor who has barely been in the game to that point and randomly decides to betray Wey-Yu and help Hicks. This short set of missions just confirms to me that Gearbox had absoluely no idea what the fuck they were doing with the game.

Weak 7. Its not refined, has a low budget, and is kind of janky, but at its core Fireteam Elite is pretty fun and uses the Aliens IP well. It has a decent number of classes with their own abilities along with a lot of weapons and attachments to use, along with an interesting Tetris style perk grid. Problems include a relatively lean amount of content, peer to peer-to-peer matchmaking, that stupid Destiny cursor on consoles with no ability to use the d-pad to select things, a lack of detail/animation, and a weird loot system that makes some progression random. The challenge card system is interesting, but some are extremely punishing like the vampire one that makes you constantly lose health until you kill an enemy (also fuck the guy who activated that then abandoned our game partway through) while others are actually cool like the tactical camera one.

ANATOMY 2016
Strong 8. This game is like 40 minutes long and its easily one of my favorite horror games. Incredible atmosphere, deeply unnerving, and very House of Leaves like. Manages to be terrifying without jumpscares and the fact that it pretends to be an 8 pages clone at first is a nice fake out. I genuinely cant believe this came out in 2016 before the analogue horror trend took off in force. It does have issues. I feel like the game ends right as its gaining momentum (better than overstaying its welcome though) and the lack of subtitles makes discerning what the speaker on the tapes is saying pretty difficult. The game also has no pause and pressing escape just closes it, which kinda sucks.

Anthem 2019
Strong 3. I cant believe this is a Bioware game. An dull, awful live service game that tries to be Destiny and Warframe at the same time but fails miserably at being both. It has boring missions, a cumbersome UI, a barren world, the most bland and meaningless randomized loot system Ive ever seen, bad story, bad characters, worldbuilding that isnt presented to you in any way you can make sense of it, a campaign that stops halfway through to force you to grind random challenges, and really bad dialogue. The only positives I can say about the game are that the combat is half decent, flying is cool, it looks good, and has some solid voice acting. This game is totally devoid of passion and heart, which are part of what make Bioware games great. I was going to give this game a 4, but as I kept playing what little fun I had completely evaporated as the game turned into a slog in every way and numerous technical issues started showing up, so I give it a 3.5.

Strong 6. While it has excellent level design and atmosphere, an interesting world, a few awesome mechanics like cooking and environmental interactivity, and a really cool magic system, Arx has too many issues to be truly great. Arkane hadnt quite found their footing and were still sticking to the old school Origin Systems design philosophy. Unfortunately, I found the game to be way too cumbersome, cryptic, and obtuse to be consistently enjoyable. The game oftentimes gives you objectives with no hint as to how to accomplish them. The games quest log seems to only update occasionally and your journal is a stream of consciousness that isnt organized at all. Navigating the world is sometimes a chore due to the clunky movement and confusing location layouts. The UI is also a mess and requires you to constantly switch between mouse look and cursor mode, which is very clunky and grating. While the spells in the game are awesome, it makes you draw the runes associated with spells in order for you to cast them. This is brilliant in theory, but in game is incredibly annoying and will test you patience and sanity. Its much better with Arx Lib, but is still far from ideal and very annoying. It also doesnt help that enemies always draw their spells perfectly, even when being hit. Oh, and the game doesnt have any marking system for quest items, which means you can sell them and break your game. It also requires 5 random items, 3 of which you find early on, to open the door to the final boss. As far as I can tell, there is no indication that these are important. Once I realized I needed all of them for the final boss (I sold a few after holding on to them for half the game waiting for them to become useful), I just stopped playing. A few more complaints are the extremely slow first half and the puzzles being way too rigid. Arx is at its best when you're exploring dungeons.

Weak 8. A very good charming little game. Pretty basic and very short, but is very relaxing, pleasant to look at, feels good to play, and has some funny writing. Didnt like the lack of a map though. Furthermore, its not super clear how long the climb itself is going to be, so you are never sure how close you are to the end of the game. Also, why the fuck was beachstickball that hard?
