Title
+ Incredible improvement of the previous games' mechanics by introducing sailing and ship combat.
+ Large game world with many areas to explore.
- A bit too unforgiving at times, especially in ship combat sequences.

Not completed.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - Nintendo Switch
Now we're talking. I love this game, exploring the open seas, destroying other ships to nab tons of gold, it's the epidemy of the pirate life. It's just so much fun, everything in this game is just tons of fun. I love Edward, with him just being in it for the money, until he decides to get his shit together with the power of friendship. I love all of the other pirates you meet, Blackbeard being such a fun character, Mary Reed being a great counter to Edward's greed, and Stede Bonnet, my beloved. The visuals are just fantastic, with it really selling you on the carribean adventure, with gorgeous blue seas, and strong winds pushing against your sails. It's a blast. Switch version even runs great, with very little issues with it other than poor audio quality. This is definitively worth a shot.

Title

Title
This game is god damn wonderful.
I was gonna give it a 9 because the first hour or so is kinda meh but there's a cheat in this game that makes Edward talk like the most cliche pirate ever and it's glorious in every sense of the word.

There isn't really anything like the feel of sailing and hearing your crew sing some shanties, or like entering naval combat against a ship thats way better than yours, let alone 2, and managing to win against all odds, that shit really makes you feel like the most badass pirate possible.

An infinitely better story than in 3 with the most memorable characters in any AC game and the best ending in any AC game also make this game worth playing for the story alone let alone the ridiculously fun naval combat.

Only complaint is that the combat is too easy but it was still pretty satisfying and it did the job well enough.

Title
Black Flag is the 4th Assassin's Creed game. Desmond Miles, the modern day protagonist in the Assassin's Creed series has died. Abstergo Industries have taken his memories and are continuing to explore them in their machines known as the Animus. In the modern day, you are playing as an unnamed character and are exploring part of Desmond's memories, so play as a pirate called Edward Kenway.

Early on, Edward kills an Assassin, and assumes his persona in order to pursue profit. It turns out the Assassin he killed had gone rogue and was working with the Templars to find a structure known as the Observatory. Edward sees his chance for riches and decides to pursue this with his band of pirates.

Although not a trained Assassin, Edward behaves exactly like one. So you still have the normal movement of scaling buildings, sneaking around, performing assassinations with hidden blades or his other equipment. Edward is equipped with two swords instead of one, can use revolvers, poison darts and smoke bombs.

The game world is comprised of many islands, some have cities, whereas other islands just have a treasure chest or similar; much like the world in Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. You will still be doing the usual Assassin's Creed gameplay, climbing massive viewpoints, finding chests, assassinating targets, with new ideas such as hunting to craft weapons and upgrades.

The buildings in this game are generally small though, and you will be doing a lot of stealth utilising bushes. I found the climbing quite awkward in this game where I was accidentally climbing, accidentally leaping off buildings, or seem to get stuck when I felt Edward could easily pull himself up.

Early on you acquire a ship known as the Jackdaw which is used to travel the seas. There's many battles to be had at sea, giving you rewards once you defeat your enemies. There's side cannons to fire horizontally, mortars for heavy ranged attacks, and explosive barrels can be dropped directly behind. You can also upgrade ramming strength of your ship. After destroying each enemy ship, players can either sink the ship and gain half of the loot, or board it to take the lot. As you board, you then fight the crew and are task with defeating a certain number of them in order to claim victory. You can then use their ship to repair your ship, add the ship to your fleet, or bribe officers to reduce your notoriety.

Your fleet can be sent on trading missions via your ship's quarters and is another way of accumulating wealth. It's a simple, shallow mini-game, so soon becomes tedious.

There's plenty of distractions at sea. There's plenty of ships to attack/avoid as you see fit, plenty of islands with treasure, strongholds to conquer, sea creatures to hunt, and sunken treasure to find. The strongholds can be attacked with your cannons, then you must battle on foot much like conquering a ship. The sea creatures like sharks and whales must be repeatedly harpooned to the death (this is visually brutal). To find sunken treasure, you can swim underwater, avoiding sharks and maintaining air supply via barrels. The swimming controls feel awkward, and you cannot attack, so must use the seabed as cover to hide.

The game has a lot of gameplay carried over from Assassin's Creed 2 (I didn't play the third one, so it's probably similar to that too). You can hire prostitutes to have a moving crowd to hide in, or hire a team of mercenaries to assist you when you fight. This is a very underused feature and you will forget that it exists.

The biggest gripe of the game is that you are very overpowered in combat, meaning you can easily get yourself out of situations where you have failed using stealth. The guards are usually very dumb so give up quickly after spotting you, are easily baited by whistling, and seem to stand in danger if they notice their dead colleagues. When things do go wrong, enemies often attack you one-on-one despite surrounding you with several men. A prompt appears to counter-attack then you can disarm, throw, or go for the kill. It's very shallow combat that has never been a strong point of the series.

When you are back in the real world, you walk around the Abstergo offices in first-person. A mysterious guy contacts you and ends up giving you missions to steal data and send it on to him. These usually have simple but varied puzzles involved in them.

I always think the games should be about half the length but twice as difficult. It's a game series that implements loads of ideas okay, rather than doing a few things really well. The game does start to feel boring before the half way point, and that's if you try not to get distracted by all the side quests.

Title
Do What You Want, Cuz a Pirate Is Free
When your franchise consists of annual releases, it's almost agiven that you will run into creative fatigue. The Ezio trilogy in Assassin's Creed demonstrated this within just three titles. By the time Revelations came along, Assassin's Creed quickly started to raise concerns that we might be in for the same thing over and over until the end of time. Synchronizing viewpoints and taking out targets is fun and all, but to truly do something groundbreaking, you need to do more than add bombs and a vaguely new setting. Assassin's Creed III attempted to subvert this by switching hemispheres, but it was clumsy and mishandled in many ways. Not to be discouraged by a misstep, the western world still had another trick up its sleeve. The Caribbean.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag feels familiar, and yet alien at the same time. You don't start the game out with some grand revenge story. You simply find yourself on an island with a lone assassin. Once you overcome this initial adversary, the game almost immediately opens up. Compared to Assassin's Creed III's overly long opening sequences, this is incredibly satisfying. You're on a fairly long leash, and the leash doesn't last very long at all until you're set free to do whatever you want, and that will more than likely be to plunder. Along with being set in the Caribbean, Black Flag takes on a vastly different style of open world. You now captain a pirate ship where you can sail the lush tropical seas to your hearts content. This is the meat and potatoes of Black Flag.

Naval combat is something that initially intimidated me. The prospect of wrangling a large, bulky brig wasn't immediately appealing due to the introduction of naval controls in Assassin's Creed III. Fortunately, everything has been streamlined to work incredibly well. Combat feels quicker than in its predecessor, and the effect the wind has on your ship is minimal. While arguably being less immersive, this does make travel less stressful. Less stress means more fun. As a whole, boarding enemy ships and sinking monstrosities twice your size is great fun. However, the fact that the main source of ship upgrade materials come from naval combat, you may often find yourself in long drawn out battle sequences just to score some more metal. While the game is very open, you'll find it difficult to continue on without keeping your ship upgraded, which means the flow of the experience is halted by default simply because you're forced to sink a fleet so you can afford that next hull upgrade.

It's not all on water, of course. Black Flag retains the traditional parkour systems, including the wonderful wilderness parkour enhancements introduced by III. There are many islands and some major cities to dock at in the world of Black Flag. There's nothing quite the size of Venice or Constantinople here, but Havana and Kingston feel decently fully featured all the same. While the cities remain mostly flat, some of the more wild island locations incorporate cliff sides and old ruins very nicely to remind you that, yes, protagonist Edward Kenway can climb just as well as his distant ancestors. The game is full of the same collectibles you'd come to expect, such as treasure chests and little sheets of paper. Instead of the nearly useless Almanac pages from III, however, these sheets have been changed to new sea shanties for your crew to sing. Not mandatory for progression, but a great way to entice you to collect as many as you can find. In short, exploration is absolutely exquisite with the combination of urban areas and untamed remote islands.

A concern many have had with Black Flag is just how little emphasis it puts on the 'Assassin's' part of the name. Edward is a pirate, not really an assassin. But this makes the story feel more dynamic and unpredictable than past entries, purely by virtue of having you question what will happen next. Playing a decidedly amoral scallywag instead of a do-no-wrong almost Batman-esque hero has its advantages. It allows far more room for character growth as Edward is faced with decisions about his personal relationships and own sense of ethics. Of course, some of these story moments feel almost undone the second you go back out to the seas to sink more unsuspecting merchant ships, but there's only so much you can do with the concept. It does very much pick up on the same themes as the previous games and proves that you don't necessarily have to play as a literal assassin to play Assassin's Creed.

Black Flag is, overall, an exceptional game. It does fall into the same pitfalls as its predecessors in terms of feeling repetitive at times, but with the gameplay enhancements and absolutely gorgeous setting, it's hard for it to feel like it ever overstays its welcome. The occasional grinding and classic Assassin's Creed bug keep it from being perfect, but it's arguably the best that Ubisoft Montreal has delivered at this point in the series. There's just something satisfying about sailing into the sunset as your faithful crew serenades you with a shanty. The modern day setting feels tacked on for the sake of there being a modern day setting, something that would plague the series from this point onward. But all that aside, Black Flag inadvertently became the golden standard for pirate games in a franchise that nobody would have predicted.
