Title
The best Ezio game, no contest. Tripping people with the hookblade and gassing people with ceramic bombs is some of the most fun I've had with videogames ever. (note to self, describing things in videogames makes you sound like a psychopath sometimes).

Title
AC2 but with the improvements that I wish Brotherhood had
The last of the Ezio trilogy, the one that's considered the worst one, I had doubts going into it, and all my worst fears were confirmed, for the first sequence of the game.

That first part is seriously abysmal, right from the first enemy in the game, instead of punching him the game decided that I was going through him and things only got worse as the game just looked like fucking ass, it looked like a PS2 game in that first mission down to the little cutscenes. The fact they also set up a decent enough villain and then killed him off in the first mission also upset me a bit, that carriage chase was lame too, seemed a bit out of place and the way Ezio just shrug it off like there weren't 50 ways he should have died there took me out. Well I was not enjoying it to say the least.

But then after that, when you get to Constantinople things really get going as you get introduced to Yusuf and the other characters, then die down when you have to do the infamous tower defense minigame, but then it picks up again as that minigame has not been seen after, seriously I never had to play it again.

The game sees Ezio on his last journey and come into his own more so since for the first time, his motivation is not to avenge the death of a family member but rather to find the knowledge left behind by Altair. In the game you get to play as Altair in certain sections and let me tell you, these are easily the best parts of the game, it's not even close for me. Sure I didn't enjoy AC1 overall but seeing Altair back and playing as him again was a real throwback...to a few days ago, still. You get to play with him from before the first game, right after, and then throughout his life right till the end. I won't spoil what happens since I think the game is worth playing, or at least watching on youtube.

The gameplay is basically identical to the one of the 2 previous games but a bit more polished in certain areas, the parkour is better and faster/more convenient with the addition of the hookblade and the brotherhood mechanic alongside the whole property stuff has been expended on a bit. Now your Assassin's have ranks and it is nice to see one of your own level up, and it is a bit sadder when you see one of em die, or 3 if you got ambushed by a lot of enemies and panic spammed T to summon them as you tried to escape just for that to fail and lose half of them...

Anyways, I enjoyed the story quite a bit and the side content wasn't too bad either, the little I've played of it, I try to stay away from the side stuff like the plague when it comes to Ubisoft games not called Far Cry 3 y'know.

I'd say this game is a bit underrated, not the best nor the worst the series has to offer and I think it's often overlooked as it is imo an improvement upon Brotherhood.

Right also the modern day stuff... happens, cool to actually see Subject 16 (not a spoiler, you see him like right at the start of the game) after having them talk about the guy so much in the last 2 games, Desmond still sucks though.

Surprisingly enjoyed this more than I expected (or, rather, more than I enjoyed Brotherhood). Main story has plenty of cinematic moments (a bit generic, but enjoyable), and the story was engaging, especially towards the end when the two storylines collide. A mature and epic ending that I didn't see coming.

Title
Series Erosion
As a whole, I didn't have any problems with Brotherhood. Reprising Ezio seemed to be a sensible choice, as he was a fan favorite, and it definitely felt like his story had more to tell. But how many reprisals is too much? Assassin's Creed: Revelations is the third and final Ezio Auditore game in the franchise, and brings forth the revelation (hehe) that a third reprisal may finally enter the realm of 'a bit much'. But it's not only Ezio's swan song, as Revelations also makes some story mission callbacks to Altair's life after the first Assassin's Creed. This game does offer some decent closure for both characters, but at the cost of feeling a little worn out, being in yet again the same time period.

Though the era is the same, we move out of Italy into Constantinople. Ezio, looking for the secrets that lay beneath Masyaf, finds himself looking for five keys to open up a long forgotten library. These keys were hidden in Istanbul itself, and so here is where the game takes place. Naturally, the architecture and culture of the game feels a great bit different from II and Brotherhood. Different languages, different clothing, and an overall different feel put Revelations a small step outside of the comfort zone Ubisoft nuzzled into in the past couple entries. The results are a little bit of good, and a little bit of bad.

The lush countryside of Brotherhood is gone, along with the scope of II. Constantinople is but a single city, albeit with a reasonable amount of variety. The Galata district is separated by the Golden Horn river, the Constantine district is a muddy and unwelcoming slum, the palace is a gorgeous play area with some genuinely calming imagery, and other such landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and Grand Bazaar allow for some good exploring. Along with being in Turkey, gunpowder is at an all-time high in the series history. Jannisaries are armed with rudimentary pistols, rooftop guards have rifles, and you, the player, now have access to bombs.

Bomb crafting is one of the new additions to Revelations. Using different types of shells, gunpowders, and ingredients, you can carry one form of lethal, tactical, and diversionary bomb at a time. Unfortunately, the game does not allow you to mix and match, so if you want to carry, say, a smoke bomb and blood bomb at the same time, you'll have to swap them out at a crafting station. The bombs are mostly fun to use, but fall into the trap of not being quite as reliable as more conventional options, and therefore being easy to forget about. Along with bombs, Ezio also acquires a hookblade, which enables some new combat moves and exploratory movement. Ziplines can be taken across rooftops, and you can catch your falls on nearby ledges if you need to. The hookblade is the unsung MVP of this entry.

One of the more baffling additions to Revelations is the rehaul of the bounty system. Now, purchasing a building adds to your bounty. Along with this, wanted posters have been removed entirely. Now the only way to lower your bounty is through bribing heralds or killing high priority witnesses, who only appear once you've become fully wanted. The stakes for being wanted are also higher than ever. If you're caught doing something reprehensible while wanted, the Templars will attack one of your Assassin's Dens that you've worked to reclaim. To defend them, you must partake in a monotonous tower defense game. Yes, a tower defense game. I only did this twice. The tutorial mission was nearly impossible to lose, and the only other time I found myself in this situation, I didn't come close to winning. So, keep your bounty low, or suffer the consequence of playing a badly balance minigame.

Revelations has some exceptionally strange decisions. Desmond is "stuck in the Animus", so there's no real modern world portion to worry about, but it also doesn't make much sense. The bounty system is weird. Den Defense is outright absurd. But that doesn't keep Revelations from being enjoyable in its own way. It manages to change things up enough so that it doesn't feel too much like II and Brotherhood, and the story does have some great closure. One more game with Ezio, though, and the shark would have unquestionably been jumped. Too much of a good thing eventually becomes a bad thing, after all.
