Hi there, interesting profile :) A new album by Diamanda Galas would be great, but ever since Mute Records was taken over by EMI, it seems they are no longer interested in promoting her. Re a DVD, for now YouTube will have to do!
Hopefully Galas performs in SA in the near future, but that would still be an underground thing. I doubt she'll fill venues like Tori Amos did (I went to the Cape Town show)! I'm based in Bloem (o_.)
Great that you got to meet Tori, heard the Joburg venue was much more intimate than the CT one, which was huge. I went to the show by bus, so my approx 24 hour bus ride was almost as memorable! I haven't seen many international acts, but some amazing local musicians - hoping to go to Grahamstown next year (I skipped 2012). Not going to the Gaga show, but I suspect the fans might be as entertaining to watch as the Lady on stage.
You must have bought tickets early for front row seats, recall the Joburg shows were sold out quickly. I also returned to the site recently, good way to catalogue CD/DVDs, but haven't written many reviews yet. You should consider Grahamstown, always a great variety of talent :)
Thanks :) I'm not really one for looking into what artists are doing actively, so I can't really comment...I tend to only really notice that somebody I like has new material out when they're a couple of weeks away from releasing an album. Don't really follow any music websites apart from this one these days. Nice taste by the way - interesting that the only Diamanda you give five stars is Defixiones, Will and Testament, that's one of the ones I've not heard.
That's a really cool story :) At the moment I'm an English Tutor for first year students, been at it for 3 years so hoping to move on. What line of work are you in?
Interesting, I'm considering freelance journalism, but know it takes commitment. Locally my taste in music varies. I became a fan of Guy Buttery and Gary Thomas after seeing them live at the Grahamstown fest. Instrumental music can be hard to get into sometimes, but you gain a new appreciation when you see them play live. I also enjoy Jim Neversink (especially the first album), the Buckfever Underground and some Afrikaans musicians (Battery 9 (though not too often), Amanda Strydom (sometimes), Piet Botha and Gert Vlok Nel). There are some other acts I am aware of, such as Josie Filed and Black South Easter, but I haven't gotten round to listening to full albums yet. I'd like to become better acquainted with more local stuff, so if you have suggestions I'd be glad to hear them :)
