Survival city-building
Genre
Survival city-builders, like other city-building games, revolve around planning and building cities, towns, or villages and being responsible for their growth, but introduce survival mechanics and put the player in charge of survival of their inhabitants. The genre can be traced back to games such as Banished in which the player builds a settlement, keeps its citizens happy and healthy by stockpiling resources or providing shelter, and perseveres through hazards such as harsh winters, starvation, or fires. The genre's growth in the late 2010s can be attributed to the success of Frostpunk, which has the player building the city, ensuring its operability, and maintaining the society's needs in an extremely cold environment.
