Isometric RPG
Genre
Isometric RPGs are games that take an isometric perspective on the game world and apply it to mechanics inspired by, or adapting, the traditional tabletop RPG rules. An isometric view is one that sees 3 planes at equal 120° angles that results in showing a more detailed view than one from a topdown perspective. Many Western RPGs in the late 1990s and early 2000s utilized this technique, as it best translated traditional tabletop methods of gameplay to video games. Games such as Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate and Fallout were released during this period. These games were often PC exclusive releases, coining the term CRPG.
In the mid 2010s, isometric RPGs have seen somewhat of a revival. Titles widely considered classics of the genre, such as Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, received remastered versions. The rise of crowdfunding and more approachable technology (most notably the Unity engine) enabled both new and veteran developers to return to the genre with games like Pillars of Eternity, Torment: Tides of Numenera and Wasteland 2.
