The one that started it all. For the most part, Twisted Metal had the essence of vehicular combat gameplay down pat from the beginning--it plays as you'd expect, it's fun, and the map design in particular is impressive a quarter-century later. Just know that this series debut is quite rough around the edges in every respect.

I hate to shit on it, but it doesn't hold up. The enemies spam special on repeat and don't attack each other, you can't see them but they can see you, ramming is broken strong to the point of being unfair, and the game is too short. If the lost video endings were included, it would easily get another point from me, but alas they were cut. The sound design and music are wonderful, while the graphics are as bottom of the barrel as you can get. Level design is mediocre (Warehouse District) to phenomenal (Rooftop Combat). I don't see myself coming back to this over TM2 or TM4.
