I gave into the memes and played this. Got a good ways into it and it was... painful. I really don't see what people see in this. It feels very low budget, barebones, and generic as fuck. A game it reminds me of vaguely is Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love[サクラ大戦V ~さらば愛しき人よ~], which I really enjoyed years ago because it had some unique charm and weirdness. This just doesn't have any of that, and at it's worst it's forgettable waifu-baiting. Not sure what I expected, but it was disappointing.
As someone who loves the game, it's honestly a horrible first sell for the series. It's easily the slowest moving entry in a series of deliberately paced games and it doesn't do the best job of training you to gorge yourself on lore and optional NPC dialog (the series' greatest strength). It also doesn't respect your time at all, which is a cliche, but chapter 3's highland sections are tedious to an unacceptable degree without turbo and many other sections aren't worlds better about it. BUT, if you can buy into or have bought into the overarching story of the continent, its excellent. Game has some of the best worldbuilding out there. On top of that, the combat is excellent and the quartz system is brilliant (what if materia was actually as good as people pretend it is?). The game also doesn't really waifu bait that hard, certainly not to the extent of a Sakura Wars, or even a Persona title. It doesn't really remind me of SW at all and it'd clearly be disappointing in that regard. Best I can do is a comparative analogy: Trails is kinda the Code Geass/Gundam of video gaming. And as a game, it probably has more in common with Xenogears and Suikoden than anything else, even if it's still not completely apt.
This certainly waifu baits much much harder than any Persona game. With Sakura Wars, that's the point, it's the original dating sim/JRPG crossover. I also really see nothing similar here to Suikoden as well. The most disappointing thing for me was the writing. It has a sort of competent overarching plot but it's let down by the small moments. idk, it's not for me.
The sum of its parts doesn't work, and the single parts are even worse. It's very much a game of its time in every possible sense of the word, but what really makes me wonder how much I could possibly love any of this is how incompetent and nonsensical the writing can be at times.
Damn, I remember loving the shit out of this when I was younger, played 1 and 2 on PS3. Now I'm just sort of... yeah it's probably better if I don't replay these. Plus the 2nd game is still in the hands of an ex girlfriend of mine.
emma obviously hiding something super important, everyone kinda acknowledging it and never seriously questioning her even when entering the final dungeon was so annoying
basically just a teaser for cold steel 2, the whole game is constantly hinting at things that dont get followed up on in this game, sky fc and zero were both in the same situation as this game yet they manage to tell a compelling story on their own. the plot doesnt get started until after the final dungeon lol, and once theyve explained it all you get a couple fights and the games over. absolutely terrible starting point, now that ive played it i dont see why so many people recommend it for new players. Im assuming cold steel 2 will be a lot better.
also gameplay wise this game feels way worse to play than all the previous ones, theres a few good quality of life upgrades but everything else is definitely worse, the models also aged pretty badly, they lack the charm of the older sprites and just look kinda ugly
