Title
This is a neat little adventure game that fans of the Druaga series will enjoy. An average playthrough is short, roughly 30 minutes, but you can replay it many times and get a drastically different experience with each playthrough. From the outset of the game, you're free to travel wherever you please, and the story will change based on the order you visit different areas and the choices you make there. This results in a large amount of event variation - you may meet different characters, recruit different allies, hear different dialogue, receive different items, and so forth. It's impressive how much the game responds based on your choices, culminating in 48 possible endings. There isn't much puzzle-solving, so you can focus on enjoying the story as you play. Even with all the different possibilities, it feels pretty hands-off, as if the game is moulding itself around your choices rather than you having to mould it yourself. I imagine trying to get specific endings may require a more hands-on approach, but playing it casually about a dozen times I ended up with diverse playthroughs and endings just from randomly trying different things.

There is a lengthy prologue that can be accessed from the main menu, explaining the backstory and events leading up to this game. Even if you've played the previous Druaga games, I recommend reading the prologue since the story was never emphasized in those games, but familiarity with the characters and setting is critical to enjoying The Blue Crystal Rod. It's hard to recommend the game to outsiders since the gameplay is not engaging enough on its own, but if you're invested in the story and characters then you'll have a good time seeing what you can make happen.
