This is my first SoulCalibur, even though I used to play "Soul Blade" a lot on PS1. Almost two decades later, the gameplay still feels pretty familiar, maybe just a little dated and low-budget if compared to other fighting games developed around the same time ("Mortal Kombat 9", "Dead or Alive 5", etc.). Single-player content is extremely limited, with only a brief story mode full of cringe-worthy anime dialogues that involved less than half of the characters.

Boring campaign, couldn't care about either main character, never played it again. As for the other characters, I'm just not fond of how they turned out, as they weren't expanded upon either. Mitsurugi, Ivy, Cervantes, Voldo, Raphael etc. seem to be included purely for fan service, there's no real story behind it, and the new characters just aren't interesting. The gameplay is fine, I suppose, I iked playing as Aeon and Natsu the most, but nothing kept me hooked like Soulcalibur III. Kilik's return was pretty nice, and I guess the whole focus of the game are the Character Creation and the multiplayer, and those are fine, but they're not what I come for, unfortunately. The stage designs also let me down, nothing nearly as interesting as previous titles. Also that Z.W.E.I. guy is cringe as hell.

Ezio's a very good guest character. Other than that, man is SoulCal V a poor experience. The fighting gameplay introduces a very typical super meter, distracting from the fencing flow of the series somewhat, but the single player is even thinner, with a dedicated story mode with cutscenes!...that are so obviously nixed from the original vision. The narrative switches characters a couple of times randomly but features only a few real FMVs, and an overall scope and tone so obviously neutered from what it should be. There's basically nothing else to do once you're finished with that. Again, if the create-a-character suite is so good, give us more places to utilise it. If Namco bothered to put in the budget and effort, they have all the pieces they need to recapture the magic of 2.

I like it more than VI and III, there I said it.
