yes to a degree, but he still gets way more credit than what's reasonable from the community. and I absolutely adore Kaneko and his artwork with all my heart. he's not the Kojima of MegaTen a lot of fans make him out to be. Katsura Hashino and Cozy Okada deserve more credit than they get, among others
I felt the combat was very monotonous compared to SMT main series games. Also it felt like the story was just focused around just a handful of characters and the world didn't really exist outside of these figures.
The combat was excellent especially if you played on Very Hard, which is comparable to SMT5 Hard. I found it even more tactical than SMT, the two reasons being 1) full party demon swapping, providing an insane amount of combinatorial complexity, and 2) sabbath system, especially in the late game, which provides a ton of turn-to-turn trade-offs.
I really hope that Atlus isn't discouraged by the mediocre reception because they really knocked out of the part with some of the gameplay systems here, especially for people that love Hard modes.
Bigger issue is that the story was pretty dull and the dungeon crawling is just awful. That 80% of the game are mindless mazes that take place in re-used sewers or the soul matrix is just abysmal.
