It really isn't that bad. Yes, obviously Kojima's sequel was better, and yes, the sidescrolling sections suck (specifically those god-awful water segments with the electric buoys), but overall this plays pretty close to the original game. In fact, I'd say it's biggest flaw is that, other than mixing in a couple interesting locations like the ship and the train, this is a pretty by-the-numbers sequel. It'd be a travesty if every subsequent Metal Gear game had gone on to be as formulaic as this one, but given that the series evolved the way it did this is a perfectly harmless iteration on the original formula.
i mean i think from what i heard and i could be wrong about this, the big issue besides not really being a canon metal gear is that, its like a stealth game that doesnt wanna be a stealth game, the 2D games kinda had that issue in general though.
