Digital Devil Saga 2 slightly one-ups the original, not only from greater boss variety but a cast with some personality this time. Not much else counts as an improvement - however, as a large helping of new mechanics/system adjustments neither solve past issues nor introduce what hasn't already been done before. Instead, this work succeeds best in the subject matter, which turns the genre's eternal fascination with gods into meditations on the human condition, even though SMT's format of lengthy, challenging dungeon-crawling dilutes some of the impact, and they still can't avoid the occasional corny JRPG moment.

honestly don't know what other smt fans are on about when they praise this duology for the story. i still enjoy it for the aesthetic alone, just like everything else in the franchise
kind of funny because part of the point of this is that the Hindu caste system is shit, and in general it's presented as a criticism of religion, like most SMT
that's a really interesting point, it's been a while for me but it makes sense if the characters were against that. i find it deeply problematic myself so i'd likely feel similarly to them.
i think i prefer the original just slightly because of it's bossfights and setting, as this one has the better story but is held back more by the horrible dubbing and dialogue as a result
this games music is some of the best in the franchise though.
also the ending is,,, eh? its brilliantly done if you know a lot about Hinduism and understand the thematics of the story, but if you go in to this not knowing its based on that the ending makes no sense, which most people will be in that camp
this games music is some of the best in the franchise though.
