Many trading card games - like Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh have official or unofficial clients that allow users to play online against other people or bots. The fundamental difference between ALL of the other TCG online clients and PTCGO, however, is that this game manages to stand on its own even though it's basically an advertisement for the physical game.
It's always up to date with the latest expansions, it respects standard and unlimited formats, it prohibits the use of banned cards, and most importantly it delivers a real TCG experince in that you have to do the ol' fashioned booster pack grinding to find the cards you need. This is not a pay to win game. You can spend real life money to obtain in game currency, however any pack you buy with that money is not tradeable, and there's no chance to know what's inside it before you open it. The only way to win tradeable packs is to win tournaments, which in return require skill and are very punishing for neophites or people who just want to casually jump in.
Between card collection, the Versus ladder with full art card rewards for whoever manages to climb to the top of it every month, the 24/7 tournament system and the masterful mechanisms behind matching players with people of similar expertise in random battles, this game is guaranteed to be addictive, rewarding and fun. Forget about Heartstone guys, this is where it's at.
