this game is "good enough". there aren't a whole lot of [recent] games that place genetic/breeding sim mechanics at the forefront, and in my experience i wasn't exactly spoiled for choice when seeking out these specific mechanics. Niche lives up to its name in that it satisfies the itch for this type of gameplay. the game isn't gonna blow your mind. the graphics ain't pretty, the UI is lackluster, and the gameplay isn't deep. but if you're seeking a genetic/breeding sim specifically, this game might do you some good.
you start with two randomly generated creatures and begin spreading your species from there, navigating biomes made of hexagon tiles. your creatures only have so many moves they can make per turn which introduces some thoughtfulness and strategy once your game gets going. there's a lot of permutations for your species including different legs, hands, eyes, head shape, tails, and body size which all impact what your species is capable of doing. random species mobs roam the board occasionally offering a chance to expand your gene pool and unlock new mutations.
i picked this game up for $1, and i'd say thereabouts is a good price. as of writing this commentary, this game is available for purchase on steam for $17.99 and i cannot recommend this game at that price. seriously, depending on your desperation for a genetic sim, try and grab this game for a couple bucks max.
