Monsters, Inc. Scream Team

I love monsters Inc, it's a great film that's full of comedy and heart and is a timeless classic (the prequel not so much.) The same can't be said for this tie in game which is both boring to play and ugly to look at even for the time of its release.

This game feels outdated from the word go as not only are the graphics hideous (which is unforgivable considering the films animation quality) but it feels more like an early ps1 game rather than an early ps2 game like it actually is. Naturally the ps1 game looks even worse due to the inferior hardware, although that's still no excuse for the hideous graphics or small locations we visit. This game can be completed in less than an hour if you're not going for all the collectibles, if you are, then expect to be done with it in under two hours as it offers no challenge whatsoever to getting all of the medals from the three locations you visit. There's a basic structure to obtaining these medals, you visit a level from one of these locations once to scare a bunch of robotic kids, complete a race against Randolph to acquire access to an in-level power up to then collect each of their ten silver medallions which then unlocks a final robotic kid for our heroes to scare which grants us a gold medal for doing so. Each location is as generic as you can get, them being a city, a desert and a snowy mountain, the levels of course having the bare minimum in terms of set pieces and enemies to fight. I should mention you can switch between playing as Mike or Sulley, you'd think they would have a separate move set from each other, but they don't as the only real difference aside from their animations is that Mike is far nimbler than Sulley which naturally makes him easier to control of the two. I guess this game did inspire monsters’ university by having Mike train to be a scarer even though he's Sulley’s assistant in the film, admittedly it does a far better job as justifying him as a scarer then that film did over a decade later. As such, you can consider this the true prequel to the first film even though you get clips of the film as regards for earning a medal.

Despite this game avoiding the usual troupes of a Disney tie in (letters to collect, coins that serve no purpose and being a rip-off if a much better game) this might be the worst Disney game I had growing up. It's boring, ugly to look at and has little replay value outside of telling a better origin story than the films sorry excuse for a prequel.
